"Guilt requires nothing of us but repentance." Indeed. Sometimes action is needed to make amends. But probably not necessary for taking all the New Yorker magazines....☺️

oh my goodness this is so beautiful. subscribing immediately. what's happening is heartbreaking, and I don't know how to hold space for feeling it all but I do know reading this got me closer. thank you!

I learned years ago while working at a health communications company that guilt and shame (when externally applied) are remarkably useless motivators; they actually have the opposite effect to the intent and can (and do) cause people to shut down or dig deeper into the "bad" behavior. I don't know why I was surprised by that, since I grew up Irish Catholic and had plenty of object lessons in front of me as to how guilt and shame (when externally applied) hadn't solved the problem of humanity's sinful nature.

(Intrinsic shame - that recognition that doing something wrong is wrong - is more effective as a preventative measure, but many people don't see the nuance there.)
